Publication Resources

Finding the right venue for your creative work can be just as important as the writing itself. The following resources offer tools, databases, and curated lists to help writers navigate the submission process—whether you’re seeking literary magazines, contests, or publishing opportunities for poetry, fiction, or nonfiction. These platforms vary in scope and focus, but all are designed to support writers in identifying and connecting with potential publishers.

Duotrope: A self-described “established, award-winning resource for writers and artists” including “submission trackers, custom searches, deadline calendars, statistical reports, and extensive interviews.” Subscription costs $5/month or $50/annually as of December 2024.

Literary Magazines database: Run by Poets and Writers, this database includes information about “publications vetted by our editorial staff” including “editorial policies, submission guidelines, and contact information–everything you need to determine which publications match your vision for your writing and your writing life.”

Poetry Bulletin: This is a poetry-specific substack run by poet and essayist Emily Stoddard, designed “to make poetry publishing friendly, easier, and more transparent” which tracks “175+ reading periods, with tools to revise and publish your book.”

Submittable: A submissions management system often used for submissions to literary magazines and contests, Submittable has a special page designed for writers to search for “creative calls, grants, fellowships, scholarships, residencies, contests, and more.”

Where Else to Submit: Managed by Driftwood Press, this page breaks down current submission opportunities broken down by organization name, genre, deadline, and possible fees to submit as well as prizes if your work is selected for submission.
