English Conversation Groups

If you are a Purdue University student or scholar whose first language is not English, the Writing Lab's conversation groups are a terrific way to improve your fluency and expand your vocabulary. The conversation groups are also a great way to meet other Purdue community members, share perspectives and experiences, and learn more about other cultures.

Each week, the conversation groups will focus on a different topic. You will discuss these topics with fellow internationals and a Writing Lab consultant who can help you with vocabulary and expressions you may not know. The goal of the conversation groups is that you learn to speak more comfortably about topics that are important to you.

Sign-up is available via our online scheduler. Use the drop-down menu for Group Programs. If you are unable to attend, please use the online scheduler to cancel the appointment.

Notes Regarding Virtual Conversation Groups

Virtual conversation groups will operate in a slightly different manner than our face-to-face sessions, so please read the information below for details on registering and attending.

  • Virtual Conversation Groups are limited to 5 attendees per day. If there is high demand, we will try to add additional groups per week.

  • You MUST sign up, in advance, in the WCO schedule system.

  • While you may attend as many sessions as you want, you can only have 1 active appointment at a time. For example, if you make an appointment for Monday’s conversation group, you will not be able to make an appointment for Tuesday’s group until after the Monday conversation group is over.

  • Shortly before the start of each session, log in to WCO. Click on your appointment and choose “Join online session.” In the shared space of the appointment, the Conversation Group leader will provide a link and password for joining the actual CG.

  • Technical recommendations:

    • Do not use Safari as your browser.

    • Plan to use head phones or ear buds during the group. This helps to prevent audio feedback through your mic.

    • This platform immediately puts you in the conversation group. There is no video preview, and your camera will be active when you join. Be ready for other people to see you BEFORE you join the session.

    • If you are having problems with video lag, use the three dots in the lower right corner to adjust your video resolution lower. The lowest option will leave you with only audio.

    • If you can hear others but no one else can hear you, check that your mic is not muted. If that is not the problem, use the chat feature (lower left) to communicate.
