Business Writing Consultants (BWCs)

The Business Writing Consultants (BWCs) are undergraduates from many disciplines at Purdue University who have taken English 390B, a special course for tutoring business writing, technical writing, and professional writing. They tutor a wide range of documents, including, but not limited to, traditional business genres (letters, proposals, memos), technical documents (white papers, summaries, reports), and scientific genres (abstracts, lab reports, academic posters). In addition, BWCs are able to work with a variety of multimedia documents, such as videos, presentations, audio, PowerPoints, visualizations, and charts and tables, to name a few.

In particular, the BWCs are active in helping Purdue students, staff, faculty, and visiting scholars with job-related documents, including resumes, cover letters, applications, statements of purpose, and LinkedIn profiles. In addition to tutoring writers in one-on-one settings, the BWCs create materials for the OWL website, lead workshops and presentations, and provide resume consultations before career fairs.

Ultimately, the BWCs look to improve the professionalism, impact, and readability of all the documents they tutor, whether for a course, an internship or co-op, an individual research project, or a job search. Simply put, the Business Writing Consultants are writing experts trained to help with the kinds of questions, concerns, and pressures unique to business, professional, scientific, and technical writing. Whether the document is nearly finished or barely started, the BWCs are available to provide individualized consultations that will help any writer at any stage in the writing process gain the skills and confidence necessary to succeed.
