Purdue OWL Engagement

Introduction

Welcome to the Engagement area of the Purdue OWL. This area houses resources dedicated toand often developed withlocal organizations in greater Lafayette and Indiana. We work with a number of different organizations from the local community: non-profit organizations, Purdue University, industry, and government. The goal of our work is to foster engagement with local organizations and OWL users worldwide.

Engagement is an important part of the Purdue land-grant state university mission, and it is an important part of the Writing Lab's history. We believe the projects included here build on these ideas, and we hope these efforts foster sustained work with local and global partners.

Recent Engagement Projects

MFRI Graduate Research Collaboration

Partner: The Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) at Purdue University; Human Development & Family Studies Graduate Researchers

Support: Vicki Kennell, Writing Lab Associate Director; Purdue Writing Lab Graduate Staff

Overview: Writing Lab staff offer their expertise to graduate researchers from the Department of Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) as they perform research at the MFRI. In discussion workshops organized by Kennell and a rotating graduate assistant, the HDFS researchers are taught to improve their individual writing as well as the feedback they provide their research partners during collaborative work. As the researchers learn to assist each other as writers, each research team's output improves. This work is ongoing and holds a vital place in the Writing Lab's ongoing engagement mission. The Spring 2019 semester will mark the fifth anniversary of this fruitful collaboration.

Writing Lab Logo Redesign

Partner: Liz Lane, ENGL 309 Instructor; ENGL 309 students

Support: Purdue Writing Lab

Overview: Liz Lane, a graduate student instructor and researcher in Purdue's English department, provided vital student insight on the Writing Lab's new logo. Students in Lane's Fall 2016 ENGL 309 course (Computer-Aided Publishing) collaborated to develop new logos for the occasion of the Writing Lab's 40th Anniversary. Writing Lab Director Harry Denny and Associate Director Tammy Conard-Salvo provided feedback and helped select the winning designs, though the entire class had input on the final logo.
